There are so many easy indoor houseplants to start your plant journey and we couldn’t possibly name all the options here! A few of our favorite beginner houseplants are Snake Plant, Dieffenbachia, Heartleaf Philodendron, Umbrella Tree, Chinese Evergreen, and Dragon Tree.
What makes these ones easy? While some houseplants are very sensitive to inconsistency and variable conditions, these ones are a little more resilient to changing environments. They’re not going to drop dead if you’re a little late on watering, and they tolerate low light conditions.
Choosing houseplants starts with assessing your light and environmental conditions. Ask yourself these questions as you’re thinking about your space. Do you have lots of windows? What directions do they face? Are there trees or neighboring buildings blocking your light? Are your doors and windows thin/drafty? Do your heating and air conditioning vents blow right where you want your houseplants to go? Do you let your home get cold during the winter? Where would you like to display your plant (floor, table, shelf, or hanging)? What shape of plant would you like (upright, bushy, trailing)? Do you want low-maintenance houseplants you can forget about or do you like to nurture your plants regularly?
Is this all sounding complicated? Jump back up to that list of beginner houseplants above! These are likely to be a good starting point even if you haven’t evaluated every corner of your space. Or come see us! We’ll walk through the decision with you!
Yes, we do! Unfortunately, many houseplants are toxic to our four-legged friends. The severity varies dramatically by variety and even pet-to-pet. While many plants cause only mild discomfort and indigestion, it’s crucial to be aware.
When you shop at Vine, you’ll notice a paw print symbol on the price tag for any plant that is considered non-toxic for cats and dogs. The ASPCA also maintains an excellent list of plant safety/toxicity. Stop in and let us guide you through our current selection of pet-safe and non-toxic indoor plants
A few of our go-tos are true ferns, true palms, Peperomia, Prayer Plants, Money Trees, Tillandsia, and Fatsia. This is not an exhaustive list, just a place to start.
Important note: Common names can be deceiving! Sago palms are not true palms, and asparagus ferns are not true ferns. Both are toxic to cats and dogs. Chat with us or research each individual variety before making a decision.
We often talk about “low light houseplants” as if that’s where certain plants thrive, but there’s really no such thing as an indoor plant that loves low light. There are just houseplants that are more tolerant of low-light than others.
Some of our favorites for those challenging dark spots in our homes are: Snake Plant, ZZ Plant, Prayer Plant, Pothos, Dieffenbachia, Heartleaf Philodendron. Chinese Evergreen, and Dragon Tree. You may notice that these largely overlap with the “Houseplants for Beginners” list above, and this is one of the reasons why. It’s worth noting that all these plants will grow bigger, fuller, and more vibrant in brighter light, but they’ll put up with your dark corners for longer than most others.
Want to really see them thrive? Consider rotating your plants so none are permanently relegated to the dark. If you’re set on keeping a plant alive in that windowless bathroom, consider a grow light! Swing by and let us walk you through our current stock of plants for dark rooms.
There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for each type of room in your home. It depends heavily on the lighting and conditions in each room. The best houseplant for a bedroom in one home may be better as a bathroom or home office plant in another. It’s better to select plants based on the amount of light available in a given room, as well as the size and shape that works for that space. Not sure where to start? Swing by to tell us about your space, and we can help you find the perfect fit.
